Outi
Pulkkinen (b. 1969) is best known as an experimental
vocal artist and expert of Finnish folk songs. She is
also one of the few masters of jouhikko, the ancient
Finnish bowed lyre, in Finland. Her music has a
meditative, ancient feel with deep emotion. In her solo
concerts she is at the same time at the edge of today
still holding her music’s roots deep in the ancient
traditions. Pulkkinen got her musical upbringing mainly as a cellist and a choir singer at the Savonlinna Music Institute in the beginning of the 1980´s. She first encountered folk music at the Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and Music, from where she headed on first to the Helsinki Conservatory and then to Sibelius Academy and the department of folk music in 1990. Pulkkinen got her master´s in music in 1999. Outi Pulkkinen has worked with several bands, with one of them, female a capella group MeNaiset, since 1992. Duo with harmonica and keyboard player Jouko Kyhälä has been performing since 1991. Pulkkinen´s work with improvisational and experimental vocal music has lead her to work with modern dance and theatre, too. Nowadays Pulkkinen is doing her artistic doctoral studies at Sibelius-Academy Folk Music Department. In her first two doctoral concert series she has been doing reseach both in the 2000 years old runo-song- and jouhikko traditions but also with free improvisation with voice, movement and speech. Apart from being a performing artist, since early 90´s Outi Pulkkinen has been teaching singing, voice improvisation, playing jouhikko as well as theory and solfege at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department.
