Maari
Kallberg (born in 1970 in Jämsä) played flute and viola
in her childhood and youth. She became interested in folk
music while she was studying at the Savonlinna Senior
Secondary School of Art and Music. From Savonlinna, Maari moved on to Orivesi Adult Education Institute and from there on to Sibelius Academy and the department of folk music. Maari got her master´s degree in folk song in 2000. In addition to the MeNaiset ensemble Maari also makes soloist music, performs at the Voice theatre Iki-Turso as well as together with the kantele player Riitta Huttunen. Maari is attached both to traditional folk music and fusion art combining many forms of art in one. Examples of the latter are among others Maari´s solo works Kallehet kajattelusanat (1998) and Impressioita Vienasta (Impressions from Dvina Karelia, 1999); Hittejä 2000 vuotta sitten (Hits 2000 years) ago was carried out together with Riitta Huttunen. In Maari´s works both traditional song and voice improvisation as well as movement and theatrical expressions are used. Maari is also keen on folk music research and recording tradition masters. She got a deep insight into these in the folk music project of Kuhmo Music Institute. One of her important research targets has been the Dvina Karelian yoiking; Maari is among the few people who still can this ancient way of singing. Maari has also edited a historical CD on these yoiks. Records: Contact
